This is good news! Apparently Mayor White has a plan to remove 800 billboards from the city streets by the end of this year. The 100th billboard was removed last Thursday. I’m glad to hear these eyesores are going away.

Now if only we could bring down those big billboards sitting on the highways. Unfortunately, they’re protected by federal laws for reasons I’m afraid to ask.

Any number on total billboards in Houston, or, better, the number under White’s jurisdiction?

I don’t know how many bill boards are in Houston, but the folks at Scenic Houston probably do: http://www.scenichouston.org

They were involved in the negotiations between the city and Clear Channel.

Thanks for you comments, Ward and Kerry G.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Clear Channel operates 1,347 small and medium-size billboards in the Houston area, and this represents over 90% of Houston’s small and medium-size billboards.

So there must be about 1500 billboards, and this program is going to reduce that number by over half! Excellent.
